the secret to ALL the magic in the world

When I was a child, around the age of five or so, my mother would read a book to me called Hocus Locust by Stephen Cosgrove. It’s a tale of a gypsy moth magician in the land of Morethansmall. The story goes that a grouchy bug named Eevil Weevil was so amazed by the magic of Hocus Locust that he wanted to steal the secrets for himself so that he too could do these amazing things. So after Hocus left his magic wagon for dinner Eevil broke into the wagon and stole all of his secrets, top hat and magic carpet and all. Back at his home, Eevil took these secrets and tried to do the magic himself, but it didn’t work. Even though he had everything that Hocus had he was unable to do the miraculous things that he had seen performed. He was outraged! Then suddenly Hocus appeared to regain his property. Eevil offered to give his stuff back in exchange for a reward. Having little money, Hocus made an offer Eevil could not refuse, the secret to ALL the magic in the world. Eevil agreed and after Hocus scribbled on a piece of paper and handed it to Eevil, he handed over Hocus’ belongings. Once Hocus was on his way Eevil opened up the piece of paper and read the secret to all the magic in the world…and he was outraged! For the answer only made more questions. The secret that Hocus revealed to all the magic in the world is this:

“The secret to the magic

(and magic is an art)

Is simply in believing-

Believing from the heart.”

So of course Eevil did not know how to do the magic, even when he possessed all of the secrets that he stole and was given, for he was not capable of believing in the magic from his heart.
